REVIEW: SPARKLEHORSE - DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL

In limbo for actual label release, see back-story below.

Dark Night of the Soul
is written and produced by Danger Mouse and Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse) featuring vocal contributions from a vast range of rock artists (The Shins, The Strokes, Neutral Milk Hotel). Initially, the album was to be accompanied by a book of photography by David Lynch, but due to legal issues with EMI the album may never be officially released at all.

DNOTS’ webstore purchases will come with a limited edition book of David Lynch’s photography and a blank CD-R labeled: “For legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.” In the meantime, the album can be streamed on NPR or downloaded through torrents. Of course, your friends here at The Funcooker have a clean link ready for you (see below)!!

The Mixtape Circuit: TRV$AM

Fix Your Face Vol. 2—Coachella ‘09 (Download via MediaFire)

Originally released online in exchange for one tweet, here’s the latest mixtape from the DJ+drummer duo of DJ AM and Travis Barker, better known as TRV$AM.

It has been a monster year for the duo after a speedy recovery from last September’s Learjet crash. AM continues to build upon his reputation as of one of the best party rockin’ DJ’s with multiple residencies in LA and Vegas, while developing Activision’s soon to be released DJ Hero. Barker, on the other hand, is on bill for one of the largest summer tours: the Blink 182 Reunion 2009.

If you’ve heard the original installment of Fix Your Face, you’ll be familiar with a couple of the pair’s lines. However, don’t sleep on this mix—it’s a great way to welcome the summer! AM’s signature genre-bending, attention deficit disorder style paired with Travis’ beastly skills blend seamlessly and solidify their place as one of the greatest DJ+drummer duos.

Lady Gaga - Paparazzi

Directed by Jonas Äkerlund (Madonna, Prodigy), and almost 8 minutes long, this mini-movie features a murderous plotline that revolves around a starlet hounded by photographers. This video apparently was “leaked” out online last Thursday before it was set to debut but this could easily be a set-up especially after looking at Lady Gaga’s twitter feed that night with her stating, “Stop leaking my motherfucking videos.” Still this 1940’s epic style video proves that Lady Gaga is a true original with a very unique vision and style.

This is my favorite song off of Lady Gaga’s record so when the music video came out, I thought it would be another one of her fun whimsy videos but surprisingly this is one of her best videos I have seen yet. Regardless of what anybody says, I absolutely love the look and feel of this video. So enjoy!
