What I’m Watching Tonight:

Fringe is back after what feels like a season and a half break. I don’t know if the hiatus was Idol induced or they just really didn’t want to run re-runs, but it’s honestly been so long I can hardly remember what was even going on in the last batch of new episodes? I’m going to go out on a limb though and guess that there will be some weird scientific occurence that kills people within the first five minutes. Olivia will say “John Scott” at least 11 times. Walter will make a request for some weird food while holding someone’s enlarged vertebrae in his hand and then Pacey will be sarcastic about it. JJ, do you have to screw us so bad every week, twice a week? DO YOU?

Anyways, the return I’m the most stoked for is Rescue Me tonight on FX. I really didn’t get to see much of Season 4 so I’m debating whether or not I should just watch tonight or let the next couple build up until I can get myself up to speed (I know I should catch up but I just don’t know if I have the time)? Regardless, Tommy Gavin and The Firefighters is one of the best programs on TV when the series is actually running and I welcome it back with open arms.

The only other thing I have on the docket for this evening is a new Reaper. It looks like the boys take a road trip to kill a giant monster and we get to see even more of the super hot Jenny Wade returning as Ben’s demonic girlfriend. I think this season has been just as funny and entertaining as the last, although I could stand for a lot more plot/character advancement (especially in the case of Andi). I just hope The CW realizes that they have a quality program on their hands (ha!) and gives it a chance to come back next year instead of replacing with yet another show about wealthy asshole teenagers who are way too skinny.

Oh, and if you’re in Chicago bear in mind Reaper is being pushed back tonight becase of the Cubs game. It’s listed as a 10:30 start but last time I believed that I ended up with 47 minutes of news and about 8 minutes of the actual show. Please adjust accordingly.

‘Rescue Me’ Season 5 premieres tonight!

One of the best shows on TV returns tonight having been on a lengthy absence since 2007. The F/X original series ‘Rescue Me’ was one of the most drastically affected shows of the writer’s strike. Instead of showing partial season last year, they decided to show a series of shorts mid-summer and would commence with an extended fifth season in 2009. The ‘Rescue Me’ shorts were simply brilliant. They took place in a displaced reality from the series. They were primarily comedic vignettes featuring the main cast members getting into bizarre and even absurd hijinks. It was a unique way to remind viewers that the show will be returning in 2009 and a way to have people remember this quirky cast of characters.

Dennis Leary wonderfully portrays the deeply complicated firefighter Tommy Gavin, and leads this top-notch cast. ‘Rescue Me’ perfectly blends comedy and drama and will have you laughing hysterically one minute, and crying the next. Essentially it does what ‘Scrubs’ used to excel at and does it far better. While other F/X originals like ‘The Shield’ and ‘Nip/Tuck have faltered during their runs, ‘Rescue Me’ has never missed a beat from season-to-season. I urge people interested in this series to watch tonight’s premiere and if they enjoy it, seek out the past seasons on DVD through whatever means necessary. This is a quality show.
